Dent One of 10 Winners in UW-Madison Cool Science Image Contest

Dr. Erik Dent was one of ten winners in UW-Madison’s 14th Annual Cool Science Image Contest. A panel that included artists, science communicators, and scientists chose images based on the aesthetic, creative, and scientific qualities that distinguished them from the rest of the submissions.

Neurons in a mouse can migrate among the outer layers of the brain, called the cortex. For Professor Dent’s photo, researchers in Dr. Dent’s lab labeled parts of the cells-greenish cell bodies and red axons (the branches the cells use to reach out to their neighbors)-to track the way shifting protein levels affect migration.

Professor Dent’s photo, along with the other winning images, will be on display in the McPherson Eye Research Institute’s Mandelbaum and Albert Family Vision Gallery on the 9th floor of WIMR II.
